Rate detail

Effective 1 January 2026, the highest standard adult per-person, per-night visitor-tax rate is CHF 5.80. The standard accommodation category (hotel, parahotel and youth-hostel-type accommodation) is CHF 5.80 for adults and CHF 3.00 for children in the reduced age band. Group accommodation, homes, barracks, mass dormitories, caravans and tents are CHF 3.60 for adults and CHF 2.50 for children. Holiday chalets, holiday apartments and private rooms may instead be covered by an annual lump sum for the owner, usufructuary or long-term tenant under the regulation. The canton’s separate accommodation levy is not included.

Exemptions

Persons with tax residence in the municipality are not liable. Children under 6 are exempt. Children aged 6–16 pay reduced rates (the schedule shows CHF 3.00 in the standard accommodation category and CHF 2.50 in group accommodation/camping categories). Ownership of property alone does not create an exemption. Owners, usufructuaries and long-term tenants of holiday chalets, holiday apartments and similar properties may be assessed by an annual lump sum rather than per-night tax when the applicable conditions are met.

Short-term rental rule

A short-term host or other accommodation provider is responsible for collecting the visitor tax from liable overnight guests, showing it on the offer/invoice and accounting for it to Gstaad Saanenland Tourism. The annual lump-sum regime is for owners, usufructuaries and long-term tenants as individual users; it does not generally replace the per-night charge for guests in paid short-term/Airbnb-style rentals. The official Gstaad information also states that guest reporting obligations apply, subject to the specific annual-lump-sum exception.
